Free Hourly Gantt Chart Template (Excel)

This free template lists tasks with a start hour and duration, calculates the end hour, then marks an X across an hourly grid (8:00-19:00) for every hour each task covers. It's an hourly schedule grid, not a dependency Gantt chart - no task links or cost tracking. Works in Excel and Sheets.

What's in the hourly Gantt chart template

One Schedule sheet, up to 40 tasks: task name, assignee, start hour (0-23) and duration in hours. End hour calculates automatically, and 12 hourly columns (8:00 through 19:00) mark X for every hour a task is active.

It's a single, ungated .xlsx file with no attribution requirement - unlike the free wordlayouts version, which requires attribution, and unlike coupler.io's blog roundup, which splits hourly, daily and weekly views across roughly ten separate downloads.

How the hourly grid marker works

A task starting at hour 9 with a 3-hour duration ends at hour 12 and marks X under 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 - the end hour itself is left blank, since the task has already finished by then.

Every hour column uses the same rule: start hour is at or before the column's hour, and the calculated end hour is after it. Change the start or duration and every marked hour on that row updates instantly.

What this template doesn't do

It doesn't calculate task dependencies, resource cost, or multi-day project timelines - those live in paid Excel add-ins like Gantt Excel, not in this free file.

This is a single-day or single-shift hour-by-hour plan. For a multi-week project timeline with dependencies, a standard weekly or monthly Gantt template is a better fit.

How to use it

  1. List every task with its start hour (0-23) and duration in hours - end hour calculates automatically.
  2. Read the hourly grid columns (8:00 through 19:00): X marks every hour that task covers.
  3. Use this for a single day or shift's hour-by-hour plan, not a multi-day project timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Does this template auto-shift dependent tasks like a paid Gantt add-in?

No. There are no task dependencies or auto-shifting dates - it's an hourly schedule grid, not an automated dependency-based Gantt chart.

How many hours does the grid cover?

12 columns, 8:00 through 19:00 (8am to 7pm). A task that starts or ends outside that window still calculates its end hour correctly, it just won't show a marker outside the grid's columns.

Does a task ending exactly at an hour mark that hour with an X?

No. A task from 9 to 12 marks 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 - the end hour (12:00) is not marked, since the task has already finished.

Can I use it in Google Sheets?

Yes. Upload the file to Google Drive, open it, then File > Save as Google Sheets. The grid formulas keep working.

What's the usage license?

Personal use or use within one business. It's not meant to be resold or redistributed as a template product.
