Free Employee Engagement Action Plan Template (Excel)
What's in the free engagement action plan template
The Action Plan sheet holds up to 40 actions, one per row. Pick an Engagement driver from the dropdown (Communication, Recognition, Career Growth, Manager Relationship, Work-Life Balance, Compensation), then enter the Current score and Target score (1-5) and an Impact rating (1-3) for how much closing that gap would move the needle.
Priority score calculates automatically as (Target score - Current score) x Impact - so an action addressing a big gap on a high-impact driver ranks above a small gap on a low-impact one.
The summary below the table rolls up priority score for a key driver using SUMIF, and totals weighted priority across every action with SUMPRODUCT.
Auto-ranked priority, not a flat manual list
Two genuine institutional examples for this exact search - a university HR department and a workplace-culture nonprofit - both publish real employee-engagement action-tracking spreadsheets, but they're flat forms: priority area, action, owner, status, with no scoring formula and no way to see which action matters most.
This template adds the calculation layer those institutional files skip: a numeric priority score per action and a driver-level rollup, so the sheet tells you what to work on first instead of leaving it to judgment call.
How Priority score and the driver rollup calculate
Priority score = (Target score - Current score) x Impact for each action - a bigger gap on a higher-impact driver produces a higher score.
The driver rollup uses SUMIF to total priority score for a specific engagement driver across every action tagged to it, and a second summary line uses SUMPRODUCT to total weighted priority across the entire action plan - so you get both a per-driver view and a program-wide number.
Who this template is for
HR and people teams who've run an engagement survey and need to turn the results into a prioritized, trackable action list instead of a static summary of scores.
It's a prioritization and tracking spreadsheet, not the survey tool itself - pair it with your engagement-survey platform's raw scores to fill in the Current score column.
How to use it
- List each action with its driver, current score, target score and impact rating.
- Priority score calculates automatically.
- Check the summary for priority score by driver and total weighted priority.

Frequently asked questions
How is priority score calculated?
Priority score = (Target score - Current score) x Impact. A bigger gap between where you are and where you want to be, combined with a higher impact rating, produces a higher priority score.
Does this replace flat institutional action-plan spreadsheets?
It adds what those flat forms are missing - automatic scoring and a driver-level rollup - rather than just another blank form with priority area, action, owner and status columns.
Can I use this in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the downloaded file to Google Drive, then open it and choose File > Save as Google Sheets. Priority score and the rollups keep calculating.
Can I add my own engagement drivers?
The dropdown ships with 6 standard drivers (Communication, Recognition, Career Growth, Manager Relationship, Work-Life Balance, Compensation). You can edit the dropdown list if your survey uses different categories.
Does this run the engagement survey itself?
No. This is a prioritization and action-tracking spreadsheet for results you already have - bring your survey scores in as the Current score column.
What's the usage license?
