What's inside the employee scorecard template

The template is a single Scorecard sheet built as a weighted matrix, pre-filled with seven common review competencies: job knowledge, quality of work, productivity, communication, teamwork, initiative, and reliability. Every competency label can be renamed to match your own review framework.

Employee names go on the Name row, and each employee is scored 1-5 against every competency. Because the competency weights and the scoring grid are already laid out, the same sheet works whether you're reviewing two employees or several — you're not redesigning the format for each review cycle.

What calculates automatically: weighted scores across employees

Once your competency weights sum to 100% and each employee is scored, the weighted score row multiplies scores by weights and totals them per employee automatically. That means two employees with different strengths (one strong on productivity, one strong on communication) still land on one comparable number instead of a set of scores you have to interpret by eye.

Because the calculation is already built in, you can reuse the exact same scorecard across review cycles — enter this quarter's scores over last quarter's and the weighted totals recalculate instantly, which makes it straightforward to track how an employee's score moves over time.

Why this beats a blank spreadsheet

Building a weighted scorecard from scratch means deciding on competencies, writing the weighted-average formula correctly, and re-doing that work for every review cycle. This template starts with the structure and the formula already in place, so you're entering weights, names, and scores rather than building the sheet.

It also standardizes the review: because every employee is scored against the same weighted criteria on the same sheet, managers compare like for like, rather than each review reading like a different free-form writeup.

How to use it

  1. List the competencies you evaluate and weight them so they sum to 100%.
  2. Put each employee's name on the Name row.
  3. Score each employee 1-5 per competency.
  4. Check the weighted score row to compare employees on the same scale.
