Free Football Depth Chart Template (Excel)
What's in the football depth chart template
The workbook has two tabs. Roster holds up to 60 players - name, jersey #, position and class - with the summary below automatically counting how many players you have logged at QB, RB and WR, plus a total-players-logged count.
Depth Chart has one row prefilled for every position across offense, defense and special teams (QB, RB, WR1, WR2, TE, OL, DL1, DL2, LB1, LB2, DB1, DB2, K/P) - type in the starter, 2nd string and 3rd string name under each.
Position and Class are both dropdown lists on the Roster sheet, so your position counts and experience mix stay consistent as players are added mid-season.
A real upgrade over paid, bare-bones grids
The scraped TeacherPayTeachers listing sells one editable Excel file plus two pre-filled examples for $3.18-$3.98, with no roster-count automation and no formulas at all - it's a static grid to fill in by hand. slidesdocs.com's community templates are similarly blank grids with no position-group structure or counting.
This free file gives you the same fillable depth-chart grid those paid listings sell, plus a Roster tab that automatically counts your players per position - a real upgrade over paying for a static form.
What auto-population from the roster can't do (and this doesn't promise)
It would be convenient if the Depth Chart names filled in automatically from the Roster the moment you added a player. A spreadsheet formula can't reliably do that without an exact-match lookup between two free-text name columns - a typo, a nickname, or two players with similar names would silently break it.
Rather than promise automation that would be fragile in practice, this template keeps the two jobs separate and reliable: the Roster sheet counts players per position accurately with COUNTIF, and the Depth Chart sheet is where you deliberately place each name into a starter/2nd/3rd string slot.
Who this template is for

This template covers roster and depth-chart assignment - for play-calling during a game, see football-play-sheet-template-excel on this site.

Frequently asked questions
Does the depth chart fill in automatically from my roster?
No. Depth Chart names are typed in by you - a spreadsheet can't reliably auto-match free-text roster names to depth-chart slots, so this template keeps roster counting and depth-chart assignment as two separate, reliable steps instead.
Does it count players per position automatically?
Yes. The Roster sheet summary counts QB, RB and WR (and total players logged) automatically using COUNTIF as you add players.
Does it cover offense, defense and special teams?
Yes. The Depth Chart sheet has one row prefilled for every position across all three units, ready for starter, 2nd and 3rd string names.
Can I use this in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the downloaded file to Google Drive, open it, and choose File > Save as Google Sheets - the formulas keep working.
What's the usage license?
Personal or team use. It's not meant to be resold or redistributed as a template product.
