What's in the internal audit plan template

The template is a single Audit Plan sheet with one row per planned audit: the audit area, type, lead auditor, which quarter it's scheduled for, current status, and a notes column.

With 40 rows, it covers a full year of planned audits across departments or processes, laid out as the audit schedule most internal audit functions need to present to leadership or a board.

What calculates automatically

The summary counts how many audits are scheduled in each quarter — Q1 through Q4 — straight from the Quarter column, so you can see your workload distribution without tallying manually.

It also counts how many audits are marked Completed, giving you a running completion figure for the year as you update statuses through the plan.

Why this beats a blank spreadsheet

A blank spreadsheet means building the audit schedule columns yourself and writing COUNTIF formulas for each quarter and for completions, then maintaining them as the plan changes.

This template already has the schedule structure and those counts built in. You add audits and set quarters and status — the quarterly breakdown and completion count update on their own.

How to use it

  1. List each planned audit: area, type, lead auditor, and target quarter.
  2. Update status as audits move from planned to in progress to completed.
  3. Check the summary for audits per quarter and overall completion progress.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this internal audit plan template in Google Sheets?

Yes. Upload the downloaded file to Google Drive, then open it and choose File > Save as Google Sheets. The quarterly counts and completion total keep working.

Is this template really free?

Yes. You give an email address to download it, and then it's yours to use with no further cost.

Does this include the audit findings themselves?

No, this template is the schedule of planned audits, not a findings log. It tracks what's being audited and when, not the results of each audit.

What's the usage license?

Personal use or use within one business. It's not meant to be resold or redistributed as a template product.

Can I customize the audit types or add more rows?

Yes, it's a standard Excel/Google Sheets file. Edit the Type values and add rows as needed — just keep the Quarter and Status columns consistent so the summary counts stay accurate.
