What's in the Shift Handover template

The Shift Handover Log sheet holds one row per shift, up to 90, with date, shift (Morning/Afternoon/Night), outgoing team lead, production actual and target, incidents logged, equipment status, and new/resolved open actions.

Production vs target % calculates automatically from actual and target units. Incidents are broken out by shift in the summary, so you can see whether Night consistently runs more incidents than Morning or Afternoon.

Open actions carried forward is the key column: it's a running total of the previous shift's open count, plus this shift's new actions, minus what got resolved - so an unresolved issue never silently disappears at handover.

Why open actions need to carry forward, not reset

Most free shift-handover templates are purely textual - a form with blank lines for notes - so an open item from Monday morning's shift has no structured way to show up on Monday afternoon's sheet unless someone remembers to retype it.

This template's Open actions carried forward column does that automatically: each row's value equals the prior row's carried-forward count, plus anything newly logged, minus anything resolved that shift. A team lead can glance at one number and know exactly how many things are still open, without reading every prior row.

Who this template is for

Production supervisors and team leads in manufacturing, food & beverage, and process industries who hand off responsibility for a line or plant at the end of every shift.

It replaces a paper or whiteboard handover log with a single running spreadsheet that keeps a shift's KPI snapshot and open issues together in one place.

How to use it

  1. Log each shift on the Shift Handover Log sheet: shift, team lead, production actual/target, incidents, equipment status, and new/resolved actions.
  2. Production vs target % and open actions carried forward calculate automatically for every row.
  3. Check the summary below the table for average production vs target, incidents by shift, and net open actions outstanding.

Frequently asked questions

How do open actions carry forward to the next shift?

Each shift's open-actions total equals the previous shift's open count, plus any new actions logged this shift, minus any actions resolved this shift - it's a running balance, not a reset-each-shift count.

Can I break down incidents by shift?

Yes. The summary totals incidents separately for Morning, Afternoon and Night shifts, so you can see which shift runs the most incidents.

Does equipment status connect to a maintenance system?

No. Equipment status is a manual dropdown (Running / Down / Maintenance) you set each shift - it doesn't pull live data from a CMMS or PLC.

Can I use this in Google Sheets?

Yes. Upload the downloaded file to Google Drive, then open it and choose File > Save as Google Sheets. All formulas keep working.

How many shifts can I log?

Up to 90 rows - about a month of three-shift-per-day logging, or longer if you only run one or two shifts a day.

What's the usage license?
