Free Construction Checklist Template (Excel)
What's in the free construction checklist
The Checklist sheet holds up to 120 tasks, each tagged with a Phase from a 9-item dropdown spanning the whole build, from Pre-Construction through Closeout. Add the Task, Responsible person, Due date and Status (Not started, In progress, Done, Blocked).
The Overdue? column flags any task past its due date that isn't already marked Done - no manual date-checking required. The summary below the table shows the % complete for key phases and a running count of overdue tasks across the entire project.
This is one master workbook for the whole build, not a stack of single-topic safety forms you have to manage separately.
One master checklist instead of 25+ separate files
The strongest free competitors for this search split the work two ways: Raken ships 25+ separate checklists, one per safety topic (crane, scaffold, fall protection), with real-time dashboards reserved for their paid app. Another free source offers two disconnected copy-paste tables - a Planning Phase list and a Build Phase list - with status and due-date columns but no automatic rollup.
This template links every phase in one file with a live completion dashboard and an automatic overdue flag - features neither free source bundles together.
How the phase completion % and overdue flag work
Completion % per phase is a COUNTIFS formula: it counts how many tasks in that phase are marked Done, divided by the total number of tasks tagged to that phase - so it updates the moment you change a Status cell.
The Overdue flag compares each task's due date to today's date, but only for tasks that aren't already Done - a task you've finished never shows as overdue, no matter how late it was completed.
Who this template is for
General contractors, project managers and site supervisors who need one master view of every phase of a build, with a status column and completion tracking that doesn't require a paid app subscription.
It's a planning and tracking spreadsheet, not a safety-inspection form - pair it with a dedicated safety checklist for OSHA-specific compliance items if you need those separately.
How to use it
- Add tasks to the Checklist sheet, tagging each with a Phase from the dropdown.
- Fill in Responsible, Due date and Status as work progresses.
- Check the summary for phase completion % and the overdue task count.

Does this cover every phase of a construction project?
Yes. The Phase dropdown spans 9 phases from Pre-Construction through Closeout, all tracked on one linked sheet so you get a single completion view instead of separate files per phase.
How does the Overdue flag work?
It compares each task's due date to today's date and shows OVERDUE only if the task isn't already marked Done - completed tasks never show as overdue.
Can I use this in Google Sheets?
Yes. Upload the downloaded file to Google Drive, then open it and choose File > Save as Google Sheets. The phase dropdown, completion % and overdue flag all keep working.
Is this a safety-inspection checklist?
No. This is a phase-by-phase project tracker (planning through closeout), not an OSHA-style safety-inspection form - use a dedicated safety checklist alongside it for compliance-specific items.
Can I add more tasks per phase?
Yes, up to 120 rows total across all 9 phases. The completion % and overdue rollups recalculate automatically as you add more tasks.
