How the WHS Handicap Formula Works

For each round you enter, the sheet calculates a score differential using the standard WHS formula: (adjusted gross score minus course rating) times 113, divided by slope rating. That single number is what makes rounds played on different courses comparable to each other.

Rather than leaving you to run that formula by hand for every round, the sheet computes it the moment you fill in score, course rating, and slope — no separate calculator or lookup table needed.

Entering Your Last 20 Rounds and Auto-Selecting the Best 8

The sheet is built for exactly 20 rounds: date, course, adjusted gross score, course rating, and slope rating per row. Once a row's differential is calculated, the sheet ranks every differential from lowest to highest and marks the best 8 as Counted.

Your Handicap Index — the average of those best 8 counted differentials — updates automatically in the summary as soon as you have enough rounds entered. If two differentials tie exactly for the 8th spot, both are included in the average.

Why 20 Rounds Gives You an Exact Index

The official WHS uses a smaller sample size when you have fewer than 20 rounds on file. This sheet always averages your best 8 differentials regardless of how many rows you've filled in, so for the most accurate index, enter a full 20 rounds.

As you play more rounds and your worst scores age out, simply replace the oldest rows — the ranking and the best-8 average recalculate instantly with the new numbers.

Who This Golf Handicap Calculator Is For

Golfers who want a real, working WHS-style index without a club membership handicap service or a paid app — you just need your scorecards from the last 20 rounds.

It's also useful for casual leagues or groups of playing partners who want a shared, transparent way to compare handicaps without each person running their own separate spreadsheet math.

How to use it

  1. Enter your last 20 rounds: date, course, adjusted gross score, course rating, and slope rating.
  2. Each round's score differential calculates automatically as you fill in the row.
  3. Check the Counted column — it marks your best 8 differentials.
  4. Read your Handicap Index in the summary: the average of those best 8 differentials.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this golf handicap calculator in Google Sheets?

Yes. A Google Sheets version is included alongside the Excel file, so the differential formula and best-8 ranking work the same way in either app.

Is this template really free?

Yes. You give an email address to download it, and then it's yours to use with no further cost.

What if I have fewer than 20 rounds?

Enter whatever rounds you have; the sheet still averages your best 8 of whatever's filled in. For an index that matches the official WHS as closely as possible, aim for a full 20 rounds.

Does it calculate a course handicap by tee, not just a handicap index?

No — this sheet calculates the handicap index itself (the average of your best 8 differentials). Converting that index to a course handicap for a specific tee is a separate step this file doesn't automate.

Is this an official USGA or WHS tool?

No. It follows the published WHS score differential and best-8 averaging method for your own tracking, but it isn't an official handicap issued by a club or governing body.
