What to Track Every Round: Score, Putts, Fairways, and GIR

Each row logs one round: date, course, score, par, putts, fairways hit versus fairways possible, greens in regulation (out of 18 holes), and penalty strokes. That's enough detail to see where strokes are actually going wrong, beyond just the final score.

The vs Par column calculates the moment you enter score and par, so you can see how each round compared to the course without doing the subtraction yourself.

Reading Your Stats Dashboard: Where You Actually Lose Strokes

As you log fairways hit and possible, the FIR % column computes your fairways-in-regulation rate per round, and GIR % does the same for greens in regulation out of 18 holes. Both also roll up into season averages in the summary.

The summary block shows average score, average putts, overall fairways-hit percentage, and overall greens-in-regulation percentage across every round you've logged — the numbers that tell you whether ball-striking, putting, or course management is your biggest opportunity.

Score Trend Over Your Season

The built-in line chart plots your score against date across every round logged, so a downward trend is visible at a glance rather than buried in a column of numbers.

Because the chart updates as soon as you add a new round, you can check it after every round to see whether your game is genuinely trending in the right direction or just having a good or bad week.

Golf Stats Tracker vs Strokes Gained Spreadsheets

Shot-by-shot strokes gained spreadsheets require logging every shot's distance and lie, which is detailed but time-consuming to keep up every round. This tracker works at the round level — one row per round, filled in during or right after the round — which most golfers can sustain long-term.

It won't tell you strokes gained versus a scratch golfer the way a full strokes-gained system does, but it will show you consistently whether your fairways, greens, and putting are improving over a season, which is often the more useful signal for casual and mid-handicap players.

How to use it

  1. Log each round: score, par, putts, fairways hit, fairways possible, greens in regulation, and penalty strokes.
  2. Per-round FIR % and GIR % calculate automatically as you fill in each row.
  3. Check the summary for season averages: score, putts, fairways hit %, and greens in regulation %.
  4. Watch the score trend chart to see whether your game is improving over time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use this golf stats tracker in Google Sheets?

Yes. A Google Sheets version is included alongside the Excel file, so the FIR%, GIR%, and averages work the same way in either app.

Is this template really free?

Yes. You give an email address to download it, and then it's yours to use with no further cost.

How many rounds can I track?

The sheet has 50 rows. That's roughly a full season for most golfers; if you need more, add rows below and copy the existing formulas down.

Does it track strokes gained or up-and-down percentage?

No. This tracker covers score, putts, fairways hit, greens in regulation, and penalty strokes per round — not shot-by-shot strokes gained or a dedicated up-and-down stat.

Is this the same as the golf handicap calculator?

No, they're different tools. This tracker is round-level stats and trends (fairways, greens, putts, score). A separate golf handicap calculator computes your WHS-style handicap index from score differentials.
